There isn’t one right order for everyone.
Selling first can give you a much clearer picture of your budget and keep you from carrying two homes at once. But it can also leave you needing temporary housing—or feeling pressured to find your next home quickly.
Buying first gives you more time to find the right home and makes the move easier, but whether that works depends on your finances, the equity in your current home and how comfortable you are owning two homes, even temporarily.
There are also ways to structure a sale and purchase so the timing works together.
Before deciding which comes first, we’d look at your current home, your financial position and what you’re hoping to buy. The best plan is the one that gives you enough flexibility to make a good decision without creating unnecessary pressure.
